This applet demonstrates audio effects resulting from nonlinear signal distortion. To run the simulation you will need at least a Java VM 1.4 or later. Please find the latest JRE (Java Runtime Environment) here.
The input signal is routed over the nonlinear transfer function plotted in the middle of the applet. The two sliders to the left and to the right allow you to adjust the in- and output gain of the audio signal. The left one accesses the input gain - or more precisely to the scaling factor of the x-axis (as visualized by the transfer function). Vice versa, the right-hand slider affects the output signal or the extend of the y-axis (the volume after distortion). Please be careful: the signal may be clipped at the top and bottom, which will produce awful sounds !!
You can choose between two predefined audio files from our web-server ("BurnsGuitar.wav" or "BluesHawkGuitar.wav") or your own local .wav-file to be processed. Due to security restrictions of Java applets you will need to grant file access by accepting our certificate.
